What is the Driver CPC Case Study test?
The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is the qualification that allows someone to drive buses or trucks for a living in Ireland. It exists because of an EU-wide requirement (Directive 2003/59/EC) aimed at raising road safety standards and professionalism among commercial drivers, and in Ireland it’s administered by the Road Safety Authority (RSA).
Getting the initial Driver CPC for a new category isn’t a single exam — it’s a two-step theory process. Step 1 is the standard Category C (truck) or Category D (bus) Driver Theory Test, covering the usual multiple-choice theory questions. Step 2, the Case Study test, is what this guide focuses on: a separate, scenario-based theory assessment that has to be passed before a candidate can move on to the Category C or D practical driving test. Like Step 1, Step 2 is delivered on the RSA’s behalf by Prometric, the same organisation that runs Ireland’s driver theory tests generally.
Who is this test for?
The Case Study test applies to anyone working toward a new Driver CPC in the truck (Category C/C1) or bus (Category D/D1) categories — typically people moving into a career as a professional lorry or coach/bus driver, or an existing car driver upgrading to a commercial licence category for the first time. It is category-specific: a bus candidate sits bus case studies, a truck candidate sits truck case studies, and the scenarios are written around situations relevant to that type of vehicle and that type of work.
Eligibility and what you need before booking
Before you can book a Step 2 Case Study test, you must already have passed the corresponding Step 1 Driver CPC theory test (Category C or Category D, as appropriate). You’ll also need a full, current Category B driving licence — Irish, or from another EU/EEA state, Switzerland, or Ukraine — along with the standard proof of identity the RSA requires for any theory test booking. Tests are sat at one of the more than 40 Driver Theory Test centres located around the country, so there’s generally a centre within reasonable reach wherever you’re based.
Format and procedure
The Case Study test is computer-based and sat under the same conditions as the standard theory test, but its structure is quite different. Rather than a long list of standalone questions, candidates work through three realistic, job-specific scenarios — the kind of situations a professional bus or truck driver might genuinely encounter, touching on areas like route planning, loading and vehicle weight considerations, driver welfare and working-time rules, and road safety decision-making. For each of the three scenarios you answer a set of 15 questions based on the situation described, for 45 questions in total.
To pass, you need to reach a minimum score within each individual scenario as well as an overall minimum across all three combined — so strong performance on one case study can’t fully compensate for a weak one elsewhere. The product this article accompanies mirrors that same three-scenario structure and is built to run to roughly the two hours typically allowed for the real Step 2 sitting, so you get a realistic sense of pacing as well as content.
Candidates who need accommodations — for example due to dyslexia — can usually avail of an audio voice-over of the test and additional time, and a reader can be arranged in private at the test centre on request. If this applies to you, it’s worth confirming the current arrangements directly with the RSA or Prometric when booking.
Fees
Fees for RSA theory and CPC tests are reviewed periodically, so the exact amount can change — at the time of writing, the Case Study test for either the bus or truck category has been listed at a price in the region of €72 when booked through the official RSA theory test booking channel. Because fees are adjusted from time to time, it’s worth double-checking the current price when you actually go to book, rather than relying on a figure you saw somewhere else.
If you don’t pass
If you don’t reach the required score, you won’t be able to move on to the practical driving test for that category until you sit — and pass — the Case Study test again. There’s no shortcut around it, since Step 2 is a mandatory gateway between the theory stage and the practical stage of qualifying in Category C or D. The sensible response to a near-miss is to go back over the areas where you lost marks, since the scenario format tends to expose specific gaps (for example, working-time or loading rules) rather than general weak theory knowledge.
After you pass: periodic training and keeping your CPC
Passing Step 2 clears the way to the Category C or D practical test, and once the full Driver CPC is awarded, it isn’t a one-off achievement to file away. To keep the qualification valid, RSA-regulated professional drivers are required to complete periodic training — currently structured around completing one training module per year over a five-year cycle, adding up to 35 hours in total (more if you hold both bus and truck CPC). Falling behind on this training can mean not receiving a renewed Driver CPC card at the end of the cycle, so it’s worth keeping track of your hours through the official CPC portal once you’re qualified.
How to prepare
- Study the Rules of the Road thoroughly. The case studies draw on the same core rules and procedures as the Step 1 theory test, applied to real working situations rather than asked as standalone facts.
- Get comfortable with the scenario format. Because each case study feeds 15 questions from a single situation, understanding the full context of the scenario matters more than memorising isolated answers — read it carefully before answering.
- Focus on the practical themes the test covers: route and journey planning, safe loading and vehicle weight limits, driver working-time and welfare rules, and the road safety judgement calls a professional driver has to make day to day.
- Practise under timed, scenario-based conditions. Working through full-length mock case studies — like the practice quiz on this page — helps you get used to reading a scenario, holding the details in mind across 15 related questions, and managing your time across three separate case studies rather than one long question list.
- Review mistakes by scenario, not just by topic. If you’re consistently weak in one of the three areas, concentrate your revision there rather than spreading it evenly.
Approached this way, the Case Study test is very learnable — it rewards candidates who understand how the rules apply in practice, not just those who can recite them.
