During the key holiday shopping season last year, traditional bricks and mortar retailers experienced approximately half the holiday foot traffic they had witnessed just three years prior to that. This decline signifies a fundamental shift in the way consumers shop and buy. The initial wariness surrounding on-line trading has declined and as confidence in internet shopping grows, so too does on-line shopping. Add to that the fact that consumers' lives are getting busier and they have reduced time available for more traditional shopping. Whilst excursions to the shops are still regarded as enjoyable by many, they are actually more of a luxury now than ever before. Shopping on-line offers consumers the opportunity to shop at a time that suits them and not only that, they have immediate access to reviews and price comparisons. As austerity remains a concern in many people's lives, being confident that we are getting the optimal deal available fills us with contentment. Whilst online retail sales currently represent 10% of the overall retail market, this is projected to double over the next decade. This forecasted trend will inevitably create opportunities in other markets. Take logistics for example, distribution warehouses will be in greater demand as will logistics providers including express parcel companies and 'e-fulfilment players. The resulting warehouses must be significantly larger than many commercial spaces currently on offer. The typical warehouse is expected to be four times the size of an average retail space. On-line retailing is going to have a detrimental impact on all other markets.

Our recent survey highlighted that insurance claimants who reported a higher level of understanding of their cover at the time of purchase, are less likely to have their claim rejected. Further, those who withdrew their insurance claims reported a lower level of understanding when purchasing their insurance. Successful claimants are more likely to have read their documentation at the time of policy purchase. Subsequent research, where claimants were subject to in-depth interviews, appeared to confuse the survey findings somewhat. Amongst those taking part, many successful claimants appeared to have a good understanding of the basics of the policy but very few were aware of the details such as exclusions) before they made a claim. The prevailing reason stated by many is the sheer volume of documentation and the amount of small print that potential claimants have to contend with. The survey also revealed that the impact of making a claim took a bigger toll emotionally than financially, particularly where travel claims were concerned. This finding was attributed to the fact travel claims are more likely to take place in unfamiliar surroundings. There was some variation between successful and unsuccessful claimants in relation to their view of what was the most important factor impacting the likelihood they would recommend that insurer. Successful claimants were more likely to regard the clarity of information they received as the most important factor whereas unsuccessful ones rated the speed at which the claim was processed in their case rejected) as the key consideration. Even successful claimants believed that there is too much documentation and small print.
