Per rendere più stabile il potere centrale, Diocleziano associò al governo un secondo imperatore, Massimiano, a cui assegnò il governo della parte occidentale dell'impero. Diocleziano tenne per sé l'Oriente. Fu anche stabilito un sistema di successione al trono: i due imperatori, chiamati '' augusti'' , venivano affiancati da due '' cesari'' , i quali, alla morte dei primi, avrebbero ereditato pacificamente il trono. Era un sistema complesso, chiamato tetrarchia ('' governo dei quattro'' ). Purtroppo non resse alla prova dei fatti: prima ancora che Diocleziano morisse si scatenarono violente lotte per succedergli al potere. Ne emerse come vincitore il giovane Costantino, figlio di uno dei due '' cesari'' . Costantino nell'anno 313 si rese protagonista di una svolta davvero storica: come abbiamo visto, concesse libertà di culto ai cristiani, facendo così cessare le persecuzioni. In seguito Costantino fondò una nuova capitale per l'impero, Bisanzio (l'odierna Istanbul), sulle rive del Bosforo, spodestando [1] Roma da questo ruolo. Proseguendo sulla linea di Costantino, pochi decenni dopo (nel 380 d.C.) l'imperatore Teodosio dichiarò il cristianesimo religione di Stato: nasceva, di fatto, l'impero cristiano.
