In paragraph 5, the word biodiversity most nearly means___

Deforestation

1 Deforestation is a term used to describe the process by which an area that was once covered in forest is cleared and becomes open land. People clear forests for numerous reasons, including the need for logs, living areas, or pastures. Natural causes of deforestation include forest fires (those not started by people), earthquakes, and tsunamis. Today, deforestation mostly takes place in developing countries due to hastened urbanization processes and dependency on coal for fuel. There is often low awareness of the negative results of deforestation and a lack of resources to restore forests. Many countries have regulations to reduce deforestation, but they could be much better enforced.

Land that has been devastated by deforestation

2 When deforestation is caused by people clearing land, it typically takes place in stages. First, a company identifies a natural resource it would like to extract from the forest. This could be minerals buried underground, or the trees themselves which are used for lumber and paper products. The first trees are cut down to make way for a road. Once a road has been built, it is easier for other companies to build more roads, take more resources, and cut down more trees in the process. Then, farmers move onto the land that has been cleared and plant crops. Usually, the soil in cleared forest land is not rich in nutrients, so after a few years the farmers abandon the land. Finally, grasses take the place of crops and ranchers move in with cattle. After five to ten more years, even the grasses have been depleted and the land is totally barren.

3 Tree diseases and insects are also major factors in deforestation. For example, the mountain pine beetle has killed millions of acres of pine trees in the Rocky Mountain areas of the western U.S. and Canada. The beetles bore into trees and lay eggs inside them. Beetles make trees weaker and more susceptible to fungal infections. It was once usual for 98% of mountain pine beetles to die over the winter but, recently, an increasing number of them have been surviving due to climate change. Trees that are sick or have been killed by the pine beetle are also more susceptible to fire. Individual trees can be protected from beetles using insecticides and other chemicals, but it would be extremely expensive to protect millions of acres of forest in this way.

4 Other human activities besides logging can also play a role in deforestation processes. Recreational campers who do not follow proper fire safety precautions can accidentally cause wildfires. On the other hand, fire suppression efforts can eventually lead to even larger and more destructive fires. When a forest is thicker, it is more susceptible to a fast spread of fire. Additionally, human-caused emissions of greenhouse gasses cause warmer temperatures, which in turn result in faster spreading of wildfires.

5 The huge extent of deforestation damage is difficult to fathom. The foremost effect of the phenomenon is the loss of habitat for forest-dwelling animals which in turn leads to loss of biodiversity, a situation that can eventually result in extinction of species. Other possible effects of deforestation include flooding and landslides caused by a lack of roots to keep soil in place. When trees are removed and the ground is smoothed over, water flows more easily and has less time to absorb into the ground. In addition, trees function as natural air filters, taking in carbon dioxide and emitting oxygen. Thus, when trees dwindle, pollution levels rise. Deforestation also limits the development of new pharmaceuticals since forests, particularly rainforests, are the source of many new medicines.

6 General media attention has raised awareness of deforestation. Consequently, many efforts have been made in recent years to slow deforestation. Tools for remote forest monitoring and software that assists in gathering and analyzing data about forests are being developed. Aerial photos and satellite imagery are also used to help assess the damage already done to forests, as well as to keep track of their current state.

7 Many countries are working to restore forests through reforestation, the process of planting tree seeds or young trees in an area where a forest once existed. According to the Chinese government, at least one billion trees have been planted in China each year since 1982. There is even a planting holiday in China that is celebrated on March 12th. In the Mediterranean region, particularly in Lebanon and Turkey, there are reforestation projects financed both locally and internationally that focus on cedar trees. Over 50 million young cedars are planted annually in the Mediterranean region. China and Mediterranean countries set an excellent example for reforestation efforts across the globe.

Restoring a forest by planting trees

8 Can all the world's forests be perfectly restored? Almost certainly not. However, as people have become more aware of the harm caused by deforestation, efforts are intensifying to preserve and restore forests. For example, governments are passing new laws to protect forests, and companies are promising to source raw materials in less damaging ways. Above all, the choices made by ordinary people in their daily lives have the greatest effect. Everyone can chip in by reducing consumption, re-using goods instead of throwing them away, and recycling.
