DMV motorcycle practice test: What is a Class M motorcycle license?

This is the study guide related to DMV motorcycle practice test in Texas

In Texas, the class M motorcycle license is the most basic motorcycle license. This is the equivalent of a learner’s permit, and it allows you to ride any vehicle with no more than five brake horsepower, two wheels and a steering wheel.

A Class M motorcycle license allows you to operate a motorcycle, scooter or moped.

In addition to these four classes of licenses, there is also a special permit for those who wish to drive across state lines while under 21 years old (called an “interstate exchange”).

What are the application requirements to obtain the class M motorcycle license in Texas?

The first step in getting your motorcycle license is to take a motorcycle safety course. This course is offered through DPS and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). The course is two hours long and must be taken in person with an instructor. If you are under 18, you cannot take this class without a parent’s permission. If you are over 18, you must bring proof of identity and citizenship when taking the class.

Once you have completed your course, you must fill out an Application for Texas Driver License or Identification Card (DL-1) and provide proof of:

  • Identity/Citizenship

  • Social Security Number

  • Motorcycle registration

  • Motorcycle insurance

  • Certificate of completion of a DPS and Motorcycle Safety Foundation - certified safety course

You must be at least 15 years old. You will need to pass the following tests:

  • Vision test

  • Motorcycle knowledge test

  • Road test

If you are 15 or older

But under 18 years of age and have a valid learner license, you may drive a motorcycle only under the following conditions:

  • You have a parent, guardian, or adult riding with you who is at least 21 years old and has been licensed for at least 5 years;

  • The motorcycle has a maximum engine displacement of 450 cc;

  • You are accompanied by an adult who holds a valid driver license and is at least 21 years old;

  • The motorcycle is equipped with both headlamps and tail lamps if operated during darkness;

  • The motor vehicle has two separate seats (not including the operator’s seat); and

  • If the passenger seat is in front of the operator’s seat, the motorcycle may not be operated with more than one person on board (operator plus passenger).

How to prepare for the Class M motorcycle license test?

The motorcycle license test in Texas is the same as the car driver’s test. It is divided into two parts, a written exam and a practical one. To obtain a Class M motorcycle license, you must pass both tests with at least 60% of the maximum score possible.

In Texas, there are no special requirements to apply for a motorcycle license. The only thing you need is to be at least 16 years old, hold at least a Class C driver’s license and pass the written test with at least 70% of the maximum score possible. If you have not yet taken your first driving exam in Texas, we recommend that you practice first with our DMV motorcycle practice test on Easy Quizzz before going to take your real exam with an official agent who will provide you with further instructions on how to prepare for it.

The most important advice we can give you about taking your first driving exam is that it is essential that you don’t panic if something goes wrong during the test! You will have several chances to pass all three exams (written, practical and vision) before being told that you have failed them all and must re-take them later on if necessary.

Driving a motorcycle is a great way to get around town, but it’s also a dangerous activity. That’s why all motorcycle operators in the state of Texas must have a Class M motorcycle license in addition to their regular driver’s license.

The main objective of having a Class M license is to ensure that all motorcyclists are able to operate their vehicles safely on public roads. This means that you must pass all the tests required by the state and receive your license before you can legally operate your bike on public roads.

If you already have a regular driver’s license, then you may be wondering what happens if you decide to ride your bike on public roads. There are actually two options for this:

What are the class M motorcycle license restrictions in Texas?

If you have a class M license, you can ride any motorcycle with a motor of more than 50 cubic centimeters (cc).

A restricted class M operator’s license is valid for one year.

If you hold a restricted class M operator’s license, there are some restrictions on when and how you may ride a motorcycle during that first year. Phase two of the GDL Program applies to minors who currently hold a Class M and wish to continue riding motorcycles. You must complete all three phases of the GDL Program before you can obtain an unrestricted Class M operator’s license.
