The Heavy Combination and Heavy Rigid classes are two of the most popular classes of vehicles in the Australian Capital Territory. Both can be used for transporting goods, but there are some important differences between them.

The main difference between a Heavy Combination and Heavy Rigid vehicle is that the combination vehicle can carry more than one trailer and has a gross mass limit of more than 4 tonnes. The rigid vehicle has a gross mass limit of 4 tonnes or less.

In addition to this, there are other differences between these two classes:

  • Heavy combination vehicles can pull multiple trailers while rigid vehicles cannot (although they can tow trailers).

  • Heavy combinations may have two or more axles on either side of the vehicle while rigid vehicles only have one axle on each side.

  • Heavy combinations are allowed to carry certain loads within their maximum load capacity whereas rigid vehicles must not exceed their maximum load capacity at all times.

What are the vehicles’ weights and configurations for HR class?

In Australia, the Heavy Rigid vehicle class is for vehicles with a GVM over 8 tonnes, but not over 15 tonnes. The vehicles must have a GVM of at least 8 tonnes to be included in this class. A rigid motor vehicle with three or more axles and a GVM over 8 tonnes. An articulated bus with three or more axles and a GVM over 8 tonnes. A motor vehicle that is towing a single trailer with a GVM is not over 9 tonnes. However, this class does not cover a motor vehicle that is towing, 2 or more trailers, a single semi-trailer; or any other single trailer with a GVM over 9 tonnes.

These vehicles are generally used as trucks or tractors and are used in industries such as forestry, mining, and construction sites.
