What this campaign is—and what it does not promise
This is a DFES Western Australia recruitment campaign for Firefighter positions, with trainee firefighter appointments and a pool reference of 2027. The notice lists various locations and full-time fixed-term and permanent work types. It does not state a confirmed number of vacancies, so candidates should treat the pool size as unknown. Being placed in a pool or completing an assessment does not itself guarantee an offer.
The official career-firefighting information pack describes a staged selection process. DFES may change stages, and details such as assessment times and locations are provided to applicants as they progress. Use the current job advertisement for the questions and requirements that apply to this recruitment period; older examples should not replace the live notice.
Check eligibility and documents before writing
The current advertisement requires evidence of Australian citizenship, permanent residency with unrestricted work rights, or New Zealand citizenship with a Special Category Visa. Applicants also need a current manual C-class driver’s licence and Provide First Aid certificate with the exact competency code HLTAID011. Attach the required evidence with the application. DFES warns that missing required attachments can prevent an application from progressing.
The application includes a one-page written response addressing two questions. One asks candidates to identify two skills or attributes relevant to firefighter work, give specific examples and explain why those qualities matter. The other asks for an example of recognising and addressing a significant skill or performance gap, including the feedback or incident, the action taken and how the learning applies to firefighting. Respect the one-page maximum and the question-specific half-page guidance.
Further requirements apply as recruitment progresses. The advert identifies a heavy rigid licence, advanced first aid HLTAID014, advanced resuscitation HLTAID015 and a satisfactory National Police Certificate. DFES says not to obtain the police certificate until requested. Review the notice and information pack carefully before arranging qualifications, because prerequisites have timing requirements and costs are not necessarily met by the department.
Prepare for cognitive and personality assessments
The information pack describes a cognitive assessment that may examine understanding written information, working with numbers, mechanical reasoning, interpreting diagrams, identifying errors and spatial awareness. This is a general description, not a published question bank or a guarantee that every listed task will appear in identical form. Useful preparation includes practising careful reading, basic numerical work, diagrams and mechanical concepts while checking accuracy under time pressure.
The personality assessment explores personal traits, preferences and behavioural style in relation to the firefighter success profile. It is not a conventional syllabus test. Read the job information, reflect on real examples of teamwork, integrity, adapting to change, following procedures and coping with pressure, and answer consistently and honestly. Avoid trying to guess a supposedly ideal personality; the official material describes role alignment, not a secret answer key.
Understand the physical aptitude stages
The pack lists a beep test, tunnel crawl and circuit as part of the physical aptitude stage. The beep test measures cardiovascular fitness and the guide gives a progression threshold of 8.7. The tunnel crawl uses breathing apparatus and a frosted mask that limits visibility while candidates navigate tunnels and obstacles. The circuit is a sequence of firefighter-related tasks under a stated time limit; the pack says it is completed in under 25 minutes and may involve breathing apparatus or a weighted vest.
The circuit examples include ladder climbing, equipment hauling, a loaded stair climb, simulated rescue, equipment handling, hose dragging and holding heavy tools. These tasks place different demands on aerobic capacity, strength, endurance, coordination and composure. Do not assume that general gym strength alone prepares you for the entire assessment. The DFES pack links to a Physical Aptitude Test training guide and recommends structured training. If you have health concerns or have been inactive, seek appropriate clinical or qualified exercise guidance before starting demanding training.
Make the written task and interviews evidence-based
The written response is submitted with the application and formally reviewed later in the process. DFES says it assesses the ability to review information and communicate clearly, concisely and professionally. Build each response around the exact prompt: state the example, explain what you did, identify the result or learning, then connect it to the firefighter role. Keep claims specific and verifiable rather than relying on general statements such as “I work well under pressure”.
The information pack describes speed interviews and a panel interview. Interview questions assess behaviours, competencies and experience. Prepare several genuine examples that show teamwork, communication, following directions, learning from setbacks and adapting to change. Practise explaining what you personally contributed, not only what a group achieved. The pack notes that the panel interview may include operational and corporate personnel, and a résumé is required before that interview.
A practical preparation sequence
First, check the live advert, eligibility and attachments, then complete the written task early enough to review it against both questions and the page limit. Next, divide cognitive practice into reading, numbers, mechanical reasoning and visual or spatial tasks. Keep a short error log so revision targets actual mistakes rather than comfortable topics. In parallel, use a progressive fitness plan covering cardiovascular work, strength and circuit-style conditioning, while allowing recovery.
Finally, prepare interview examples and organise evidence for later checks. Do not assume that passing one stage means automatic progression; the pack says not all applicants who pass a stage necessarily advance. Keep official messages, follow instructions about dates and locations, and check the current advertisement for changes. The official Pool Ref 2027 notice closes on 16 November 2026 at 4.00 pm AWST, so allow time to submit a complete application before the deadline.
