What Is the CHRL Knowledge Exam?
The CHRL Knowledge Exam (often written as the CHRL-KE) is the certification exam administered by the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) as part of the process for earning the Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation in Ontario. The CHRL is one of three professional designations HRPA grants to HR practitioners — alongside the CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional) and CHRE (Certified Human Resources Executive) — and it’s generally positioned as the designation for HR professionals who have moved into, or are working toward, a more senior or leadership-oriented role.
Because HRPA is established under Ontario’s Registered Human Resources Professionals Act, 2013, the CHRL isn’t just an industry badge — it’s a regulated professional designation with legal standing in the province, similar in structure to how other regulated professions govern entry to practice. That’s part of why the process is more involved than a typical corporate certificate: there’s coursework, an experience requirement, and two separate exams to pass.
Who Administers It and Why It Matters
HRPA is the sole body that administers the CHRL designation and its associated exams in Ontario. The Knowledge Exam itself is delivered through Prometric, a third-party testing provider that HRPA contracts with for secure exam administration. As of 2026, HRPA has been moving toward requiring candidates to write at an in-person Prometric Test Centre, with limited exceptions for remote writing considered on a case-by-case basis (including hardship situations) — so if you’re planning your exam date, it’s worth confirming the current delivery options directly with HRPA before you register, since testing policies can shift from one cycle to the next.
Eligibility: What You Need Before You Can Write It
You can’t simply register and sit the CHRL Knowledge Exam on a whim — HRPA requires candidates to meet eligibility criteria first, which generally includes:
- A recognized degree or equivalent credential.
- Completion of HR coursework across nine designated subject areas (think areas like recruitment and selection, compensation, labour relations, organizational behaviour, and employment law, among others), typically completed through an HRPA-approved program or an accredited post-secondary HR program.
- At least three years of professional HR experience, assessed against HRPA’s experience requirements for the CHRL level specifically (the bar is higher than for the CHRP).
- Active, good-standing registration with HRPA as a student or member — your eligibility and registrant status need to be confirmed before you’re permitted to book the exam.
Because the coursework and experience requirements can be satisfied through a few different pathways (including an Alternate Route of Entry for those with substantial senior HR experience but a less traditional academic background), it’s worth reviewing HRPA’s own designation requirements page carefully for your specific situation rather than assuming a one-size-fits-all checklist applies.
The Exam Format
The CHRL Knowledge Exam is a 250-question, multiple-choice exam, with each question offering four answer options. A portion of those 250 items (roughly 20 to 30) are unscored pretest or “test” questions that HRPA uses to evaluate future exam content — they’re mixed in randomly throughout the exam, so there’s no way to identify which ones don’t count toward your score. Candidates are typically given around five hours to complete it.
Separately, candidates must also pass the CHRL Employment Law Exam, a 110-question multiple-choice exam focused specifically on employment and workplace law as it applies in Ontario. This is administered as a distinct exam from the Knowledge Exam, and both must be completed as part of the overall CHRL certification process.
Fees
Based on HRPA’s published fee schedule, candidates should budget roughly:
- $365 plus HST to register for the CHRL Knowledge Exam.
- $275 plus HST (around $310.75 with HST) to register for the CHRL Employment Law Exam.
Fees are subject to change, and HRPA may also charge separately for rescheduling or rewriting an exam, so it’s best to confirm the current amounts on HRPA’s official site when you’re ready to register rather than relying on older figures.
What Happens if You Don’t Pass
If you don’t pass on your first attempt, HRPA does allow retakes, generally within a defined window and for an additional fee per attempt — but exact waiting periods, the number of permitted attempts, and current retake fees are the kind of detail that HRPA updates from time to time, so check directly with HRPA (or your registrant portal) for the current retake policy before assuming how long you’ll need to wait or what it will cost to try again. What is consistent is that a non-pass doesn’t end your path to certification — it simply means you’ll need to re-register, pay the applicable fee, and demonstrate readiness on a subsequent sitting.
Maintaining the Designation
Once you’ve earned your CHRL, the work isn’t entirely finished — HRPA requires certified members to complete Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to maintain the designation. CHRP, CHRL, and CHRE holders are generally expected to accumulate roughly 66.67 hours of CPD activity over each three-year cycle, which can include continuing education, instructional or leadership activities, relevant research or publication, and completion of significant HR projects. Some portion of those hours is typically expected to cover professional ethics specifically. Logs are usually due near the end of each CPD cycle, so keeping a running record as you go — rather than scrambling at the deadline — tends to make renewal much less stressful.
Tips to Prepare
- Confirm your eligibility early. Don’t wait until the last minute to find out you’re missing a subject area or experience hours — review HRPA’s requirements as soon as you start planning.
- Study across all nine subject areas, not just your strengths. The exam draws broadly from the HR body of knowledge, so a candidate who’s strong in recruitment but weak in compensation or labour relations can still be caught off guard.
- Get comfortable with the four-option multiple-choice format under time pressure. With 250 questions in roughly five hours, pacing matters — practising with realistic, exam-style questions beforehand helps you build the speed and confidence to work through the material methodically rather than second-guessing yourself on every item.
- Don’t neglect the Employment Law Exam. It’s a separate 110-question exam with its own content focus, so treat it as a distinct study project rather than an afterthought to the Knowledge Exam.
- Review HRPA’s own materials and current policies close to your exam date. Requirements, fees, and delivery formats (such as the shift toward in-person Prometric testing) can change, so your final prep check should always include a look at HRPA’s current, official guidance.
Preparing for the CHRL Knowledge Exam is ultimately about building broad, applied HR knowledge and getting used to answering a large volume of scenario-based questions accurately and efficiently — a combination that steady, realistic practice over time tends to build far better than last-minute cramming.
