Some drivers are required to obtain an add-on endorsement before they can operate air-braked vehicles. An air brake endorsement will allow you to operate vehicles equipped with air brakes, or any vehicle that is equipped with brakes that use compressed air as the operating source.

If you hold a Class 5 driver’s license and wish to drive a vehicle equipped with air brakes, you may apply for an Air Brake (Air) Endorsement at your nearest Autopac agent. Once you have obtained this endorsement and are operating an air-braked vehicle, you will not be permitted to drive a non-air braked vehicle without obtaining another endorsement. This requirement applies regardless of the type of vehicle being operated, even if it is also classed as an air-braked vehicle.

Why there is a need of Air brake endorsement for drivers?

It is not required to have an air brake endorsement in order to drive any vehicle with air brakes. But it is required to have the air brake endorsement to drive vehicles equipped with Air Brakes.

If you take the non-air brake written exam, you are disqualified from driving a vehicle equipped with Air Brakes. You can drive trucks that are not equipped with Air Brakes, but not those which are.

This is because taking a test and passing it does not mean that you know how to operate that equipment safely. For example, if you pass the motorcycle written exam, you cannot drive a motorcycle without further training and licensing. The same applies for air brakes.

Passing an air brake endorsement test means that you understand how to operate Air Brake systems safely and correctly. If you do not have an Air Brake endorsement and try to drive a vehicle equipped with Air Brakes, you will be disqualified from driving that vehicle until you receive proper training and certification.
