Class 1

Permits the operator to operate semi-trailers and all kinds of vehicles except motorcycles. The minimum age requirement is 18.

Class 2

Permits the operator to operate busses, and also allows the operator to operate vehicles of classes 3, 4, and 5. The minimum age requirement is 18.

Class 3

Permits the operator to operate trucks with more than two axles. The minimum age requirement is 18.

Class 4

Permits the holder to operate ambulances, taxis, busses and other emergency vehicles. It also permits the holder to operate Class 5 vehicles. The minimum age requirement is 18.

Class 5

Permits the holder to operate vehicles and light trucks (SUVs, cars, and pickups). It has 3 GDL stages, i.e. Class Full stage, Class intermediate, Class Learner stage.

Class 6

Permits the holder to operate all types of motorcycles. The minimum age requirement is 16. It has 4 stages, i.e.

  • Class 6M - This is also known as motorcycle training course licence

  • Class 6L - This is also known as motorcycle learner’s-stage licence

  • Class 6I - This is also known as motorcycle intermediate-stage licence

  • Class 6F - This is also known as motorcycle full-stage licence

What is a knowledge test MPI?

The knowledge test MPI is valid for heavy trucks and tractor trailers. A knowledge test MPI is required to drive a combination of vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 4,540 kilograms (10,000 pounds) if the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is greater than 4,540 kilograms (10,000 pounds). One can also operate all vehicles in Classes 4 and 5.

What do you know about Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation (MPI)?

The Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation (MPI) is a non-profit Crown corporation of the province of Manitoba. It was established in 1971, when The Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation Act replaced and expanded upon the former Automobile Act.

All vehicles must be registered with MPI to legally operate on Manitoba roadways, and all residents must have valid automobile insurance coverage. MPI offers basic coverage such as collision, comprehensive and liability, as well as optional coverage such as loss of use and Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP). The basic coverages are all no fault coverages which means that regardless of who is at fault in an accident, your insurance company will pay for your damages first. MPI provides driver training, licensing and testing at Driver Licensing Offices across the province.

What are the eligibility criteria for the knowledge test MPI?

Eligibility criteria for knowledge test MPI:

  • To obtain a Class 3 licence, you must:

  • Be 18 years old and legally entitled to work in Canada.

  • Produce a medical report from a qualified medical practitioner.

  • Present a record of safe driving (minimum of two years).

  • Provide written authorization from your employer to attend this course.

  • Pass a knowledge test, an air brake test and a road test before obtaining the licence.

What are the steps to get a knowledge test MPI?

The knowledge test MPI is the most commonly requested license for those that want to drive any kind of truck. A standard Manitoba driver’s license will let you drive a car, but not a large truck or commercial vehicle.

Steps to get a knowledge test MPI:

  1. Complete an application form. This can be done online at the MPI website, or by obtaining one from any Autopac agent.

  2. Complete the knowledge test at any Autopac agent. Study the MPI Driver’s Handbook carefully before taking the test.

  3. After passing the knowledge test, set up an appointment to take your road test at any Autopac agent. The road test must be taken within 90 days of passing the knowledge test and no more than 5 years after submitting your application form. If you fail, you must wait 14 days before retaking it unless you have taken a driver training course approved by MPI; in this case you only have to wait 7 days before redoing your road test.

  4. After successfully completing your road test, apply for your Class 3 license at any Autopac agent or MPI Service Centre (the latter is not available in Brandon).
